Multi-discipline brand design consultancy, Harrison, has overhauled popular Cornwall pub, The Oystercatcher. The extensive two-year project combined new branding, integrated interior design and architecture to deliver a contemporary look and feel that highlights the venue’s stunning views of Polzeath Beach – one of Cornwall’s most renowned surfing destinations.
With a new expansive extension, the St Austell Brewery-owned The Oystercatcher, which stands on top of the Polzeath village hill, now boasts a large-scale glazed frontage, which has tripled the internal covers, and frames stunning panoramic views of the beach and surrounding countryside. The massive extension has not only enlarged the dining space, but also allowed for the creation of an external seating area.
Inspired by natural materials, the surfing ties of the area and the nearby beach, the Harrison team have created a space that brings in light, and a current finish that works seamlessly with the original building structure. With an extension of space into the dining area, The Oystercatcher is now able to maximise its food offering and with more floor space, increase the profit opportunity of the already popular bar.
Kevin Grima, Creative Director, Harrison, comments: “We were tasked by the team at St Austell Brewery to help update The Oystercatcher and also to look at ways to expand the outside space – keeping in mind the importance of any changes to help escalate the profitability of the venue.
“We wanted to bring in elements of nature, surfing (the bar is in a surfing hotspot) and the beach, but of course didn’t wanted to create anything overly themed. The main challenge was to ensure that we updated the space but didn’t create a disconnect between the atmosphere vibe of the bar and the rest of The Oystercatcher building – which is also a hotel. We are extremely happy with the final design, and it feels like The Oystercatcher now has a fitting look and feel to match its incredible bar view.”
Steve Worrall, Retail Director, St Austell Brewery says: “We’re delighted with the finished results of the Oystercatcher’s refurbishment and extension. Harrison have delivered an iconic venue – in keeping with its unrivalled views of Polzeath coastline – that perfectly fits with our initial brief.”
Harrison’s work with The Oystercatcher also included the inception of a new logo and branding, which now boldly unifies signage, menus and staff uniforms.
The Oystercatcher is open now and joins the Harrison family portfolio of work which spans across design, strategic thinking, insights, demographics and trend analysis with intelligent storytelling.
