City’s historic Chartist Tower becomes a hotel – and the results are amazing!
A £12million project to transform Newport’s tallest building into a luxury city-centre hotel is almost at its completion.
The IAD Company’s design team are working on the finishing touches to the four-star Accor Hotel, and have offered a sneak-peak into the 142-bedroom site on Commercial Street as it moves towards opening its doors to the public.
The IAD Company has spent the past nine months transforming the derelict building into a 15-floor luxury hotel complete with an in-house restaurant, 30,000sq ft of office space and 18,000sq ft of retail space.
Planning permission for the project was approved in July 2018 and since then IAD has worked closely with the hotel’s owners Garrison Barclays Estates to breathe new life into the 1960s derelict former office building.

It has been an amazing project to work on and will provide much-needed hotel, conference and office facilities in the heart of a rapidly expanding city centre for Newport.”
In conjunction with Architects Powell Dobson and the wider Chartist Tower Hotel project team, the attention to detail on this development has been second to none.
Every part of the specification has been carefully chosen to promote the sense of luxury that a brand new city centre hotel demands, with acknowledgements made to the history of the locality within its design too.
Colour schemes used throughout the hotel have been chosen to reflect some of Newport and the surrounding area’s natural resources too, with sea, sand and coal represented in the design. The hotel’s carpets have been chosen to reflect the surrounding cityscape, as well as a special nod being given to Newport’s famous Transporter Bridge.

The Chartist Tower Hotel is expected to welcome its first guests this autumn, with opening of the offices set to coincide with that of the hotel.
