Hoteliers urged to seek mark of true expert

HOTEL owners and managers hit by pest problems this summer are being urged to look out for the mark of a true professional.

Industry insiders are warning the pest control market is awash with unqualified traders and say only by choosing an expert with a special identity card can hoteliers be certain of their credentials.

The BASIS PROMPT register is an industry initiative providing independent proof that technicians have received proper training and continue to update their expertise.

Every member is issued with a membership card and it’s that, according to managing director Rob Simpson, which helps them to stand out from the crowd.

He said: “To join the BASIS PROMPT database, technicians must be fully-trained professionals who are up to date with the latest products and techniques.

“So hoteliers can be sure that anyone carrying our identity card is an expert in the field who won’t land them with a huge bill for a job that’s only half finished.

“The card should be carried at all times and it’s easily recognisable, so people can always be sure PROMPT Pest Controllers are exactly who they say they are.”

Mr Simpson acknowledges hotel owners can be tempted to use less reputable pest controllers, or even take matters into their own hands, simply to save money. But he insists ignoring the professional approach can prove to be a false economy.

He warned: “If people try to deal with issues themselves, or bring in unqualified controllers because they are cheap, infestations could get out of hand.

“It’s easy to get out of your depth when trying to control pests as their treatment is often complicated and specialised.

“Every year members of the public not only waste millions of pounds on failed treatments they’ve administered themselves, but in some cases are prosecuted for inhumane treatment of pests they trap and kill.

“If people don’t know what they’re doing, or don’t know the law, I would urge them to employ a professional who is a member of the BASIS PROMPT register.

“That way, they can be assured of safe, effective and legal treatment.”
